Trump’s admission occurred amid India’s criticism of US trade policies, highlighting perceived inconsistencies in sanctions against Russia related to the Ukraine conflict.
Despite the three years into the war, the US and Europe keep billions in trade with Russia. Western countries still import billions of euros worth of Russian energy and commodities, and the goods include liquefied natural gas and enriched uranium among others, although they keep lecturing other countries not to purchase Russian goods.

India last week highlighted the alleged hypocrisy, calling it Western double standards, after President Trump made fresh threats over its increasing purchases of Russian crude oil. The US reportedly imported approximately $1.27 billion in Russian fertilizers last year and $624 million in enriched uranium in 2024,
Notably, the trade between the EU and Russia has also continued despite EU sanctions though import restrictions on some products since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war, affecting significantly the volume of imports. However, India’s imports from Moscow surged to $65.7 billion in 2024 from $8.25 billion in 2021, as per the information on the Indian Commerce Ministry website.
