As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the currency in circulation as on July 19, 2024 is Rs 35,54,532 crore, Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary informed the Parliament today. The minister also told the Rajya Sabha that Currency with the public (CwP) grew by 4.1 per cent in 2023-24 as compared with 7.9 per cent in 2022-23, reflecting the impact of withdrawal of Rs 2000 banknotes effective May 19, 2023. As on July 12, 2024, CwP rose by 7.2 per cent largely on account of base effect of the withdrawal of Rs 2000 banknotes, he added.

“CwP to GDP ratio has moderated from 12.9 per cent in 2021-22 to 11.5 per cent in 2023-24,” minister Chaudhary said while responding to a question by Rajya Saba member R Girirajan.
