Edited by Hiba Anvar

The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) and the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) partnered with ADNOC (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) and announced  a scholarship program for students opting for its inaugural Master’s program in Energy Transition and Sustainability at the upcoming Abu Dhabi campus. The scholarship announcement will strengthen the significance of this newly introduced master’s program and underscores all partners’ joint commitment in nurturing skilled talent in the UAE.

The transformative partnership, coinciding with the country’s ‘Year of Sustainability’, will offer up to 15 scholarship places in the master’s program. This is the first academic program of the upcoming campus of IIT-Delhi.

In addition to these scholarships, 10 more fully sponsored scholarship positions along with scholarships will be available for selected students from India, UAE and other countries.

The master’s program will provide one of the most important topics of the present times- a robust foundation on technologies and policies related to the energy transition. This will allow the students to specialize in two areas which are, ‘Technologies for Decarbonization’ and ‘Economics, Policy and Planning for Energy Transition.’ This will enable the students to opt to choose a blend of course from the two areas.

“ADEK stands at the forefront of forging an extraordinary path in the UAE’s higher education sector and recognising the importance of industry partnerships to align our education ecosystem with emerging jobs in evolving sectors,” said Dr. Ahmed Sultan Alshoaibi, Acting Executive Director of the Higher Education Sector at ADEK. “Together with ADNOC and IIT Delhi, we are embarking on a journey that will revolutionize the energy sector’s leadership landscape. With plans of expanding its scope to encompass a diverse range of programs in the future, this partnership sets an inspiring precedent for innovation and advancement on a global scale.”

“IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi reflects the shared vision of the two countries in focusing on areas of educational excellence, innovation, knowledge exchange and investment in human capital. As its first academic offering, we expect the Master’s in Energy Transition and Sustainability to bring exciting opportunities to our graduates as they pursue careers in this space,” said Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi. “We are excited about the unwavering support we have received from ADEK, along with the invaluable partnership of industry leader ADNOC, who have joined forces with us to provide comprehensive sponsorship to our students. We also expect this program to become a cornerstone of the research and development in the space of renewable energy and energy transition, which we expect to become one of the focus areas of the Abu Dhabi campus.”

The proposed ET&S master’s, scheduled to start in January 2024, aims to prepare professionals and scholars of the energy industry and associated sectors by offering a comprehensive and multifaceted understanding of technology, public policy, and environmental sustainability issues in the energy sector.

Interested candidates will have to undergo a rigorous selection process, in line with IIT Delhi’s stringent academic standards. Candidates must hold a four-year bachelor’s degree in any engineering discipline, or the following science disciplines: physical science, chemical science, environmental science, earth science. Alternatively, a master’s degree in any of the above science disciplines is also acceptable as a qualifying degree. The program will provide full sponsorship to the selected meritorious candidates, covering their fees and other associated expenses.
