BN Chandrappa is a Congress candidate who is set to run for the 18th Lok Sabha elections from the Chitradurga constituency. The constituency will see franchise on April 26, 2024.
B N Chandrappa was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Chitradurga constituency in the 2014 elections. Chandrappa has an MA (Sociology) from CV Raman University. He is a social worker, agriculturist, and educationist by profession. Despite being a non native of the Chitradurga constituency he has been fielded by the Congress as the constituency is well known to elect outsiders in power. Chandrappa started his political career in Chikkamagaluru.
His performance in the lower house remained good as he registered 87% attendance, and asked 336 questions to employment, urban and rural development, agriculture, and industries among others. As the Arid Region of Karnataka is facing draught, the two key candidates, Govind Karjol of BJP and BN Chandrappa of Congress are trying to convince voters by making promises to work for the farmers.
In the last general elections, A. Narayanswamy of BJP won the elections with 50.26 percent share defeating Chandrappa of Congress who secured 43.82 percent votes. In the previous elections, the voter turnout was 70.8%. In the 17 Lok Sabha elections congress won 12 of them from Chitradurga.
The 8 assembly seats of Chitradurga include Molakalmur, Chitradurga, Hiriyur, Hosadurga, Holalkere, Challakere, Pavagada and Sira. During the last assembly elections, 7 seats were won by the Congress and 1 by BJP. The total number of voters in the constituency is 18,56,876.
Chitradurga is a SC category parliament seat with a 66.07% literacy rate. The SC, ST, and Muslims constitute 22.29%, 15.6%, and 8.12% of the total population here.
