‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ Hits Theatres In India: A New Chapter In The Dinosaur Saga Begins

Jurassic World: Rebirth, the latest entry in the long-running Jurassic Park franchise, has officially landed in theatres across North America. Released on July 2, 2025, by Universal Pictures, the film marks a fresh standalone sequel to Jurassic World Dominion (2022) and becomes the seventh instalment in the franchise overall. It now hits theatres in India today on July 4th, 2025.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, The Creator) and written by David Koepp, who co-wrote the original Jurassic Park (1993) with author Michael Crichton, Rebirth introduces a new cast of characters and a different narrative direction. The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Ed Skrein.

Executive producer Steven Spielberg initiated development on the project shortly after Dominion was released. He collaborated closely with Koepp to craft a story that returns the franchise to its science-thriller origins. Notably, Koepp had initially stepped away from the series after The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), but rejoined after Spielberg pitched the foundational idea for Rebirth, one that hearkens back to the tone and pacing of the earlier films.

Filming took place from June to September 2024 in multiple locations, including Thailand, Malta, and the United Kingdom. The film had its world premiere at London’s Odeon Luxe Leicester Square on June 17, 2025.

Set five years after the events of Dominion, the plot centres around Zora Bennett (Johansson), a former covert operative hired by a pharmaceutical firm, ParkerGenix, to retrieve genetic samples from prehistoric animals that may hold medical breakthroughs. She joins forces with palaeontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Bailey) and team leader Duncan Kincaid (Ali) on a mission to the abandoned InGen island laboratory on Ile Saint-Hubert.

The film opens with a flashback to 2010, when a rogue six-limbed tyrannosaur — dubbed Distortus rex — escapes containment on the island, prompting its evacuation.

Years later, Zora’s team encounters shipwreck survivors and faces multiple genetically altered threats, including a Mosasaurus, a pack of Spinosaurus, and flying raptor hybrids known as Mutadons. The story culminates in a final escape sequence involving a hidden boat launch and the destruction of the remaining facility.

One of the central narrative ideas, that dinosaur DNA may offer solutions to human diseases, emerged from Spielberg and Koepp’s research into actual paleogenetics. The plot’s medical angle is based on real scientific discussions, including commentary from Ben Lamm of Colossal Biosciences, who noted the real-world potential in extinct species’ genomes.

Koepp also borrowed unused material from Crichton’s original Jurassic Park novel, including a river escape from a Tyrannosaurus and philosophical musings about genetic responsibility, delivered in a monologue by Loomis. The screenwriter deliberately avoided referencing previous characters and focused on a completely new ensemble, allowing the story to branch out without needing to resolve lingering franchise arcs.

Cast and Key Roles

  • Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, the film’s central protagonist and expedition leader

  • Mahershala Ali as Duncan Kincaid, the team’s field leader

  • Jonathan Bailey as Dr. Henry Loomis, a palaeontologist whose insights anchor the science-driven narrative

  • Rupert Friend as Martin Krebs, a pharmaceutical representative with hidden motives

  • Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Reuben Delgado, a stranded civilian caught in the chaos

  • Luna Blaise, David Iacono, Audrina Miranda, and others round out the supporting cast

The film was produced by Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley, with Spielberg returning in an executive producer role. Koepp completed the screenplay in late 2023, with production moving swiftly to meet the summer 2025 release window. The film’s setting and scientific premise were influenced by both Crichton’s novels and contemporary genetic research.

Koepp emphasised that non-mutated dinosaurs were portrayed as animals rather than movie monsters, reinforcing the franchise’s original theme of nature’s unpredictability. This conscious creative decision marked a departure from the more hybrid-focused narratives of the recent Jurassic World films.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is now playing in theatres. It represents a creative reset for a franchise that continues to evolve, 32 years after audiences first heard the iconic roar in Jurassic Park.
