Malayalam cinema gets a quirky sci-fi thriller today with ‘Dhoomakethu’, starring Sajin Gopu and Nikhila Vimal in the lead.

Directed by Sudhi Maddison, the film hits theatres worldwide on September 25, 2026, after a brief postponement from its originally planned release earlier this month.

The film follows Kuttan, a 36-year-old groom who experiences a disturbing vision of his own death on the morning of his wedding.

This unsettling experience soon turns into a bizarre cycle in which Kuttan finds himself repeatedly confronting death, leading to a story that combines science fiction, dark comedy, mystery, and thriller elements.

Sajin Gopu, who rose to wider attention with Aavesham, plays the central character of Kuttan, while Nikhila Vimal plays his bride. The supporting cast includes Shine Tom Chacko, Ganapathi, Sidharth Bharathan, and Manju Pillai.

The film’s narrative also features an underwater mystery, with the production involving extensive practical underwater sequences filmed in the backwaters.

The unusual combination of a wedding-day premise, a recurring death loop and a murder mystery forms the central intrigue of Dhoomakethu.

Sudhi Maddison, known for directing Neymar, helms the film from a screenplay written by Sonny Babu Antony and Manu Madhusudhanan.

The film is produced by Sameer Thahir, Shyju Khalid, Sajin Ali Pulakkal and Abbas Thirunavaya under Happy Hours Entertainments and A & HS Production House.

The technical team includes Jinto George as cinematographer, with Vivek Harshan and Chaman Chakko handling the editing.

Ankit Menon has composed the music, including the song Chiranjeevi, while Justin Varghese has contributed the background score. Renganaath Ravee is in charge of sound design, with Ouseph John as production designer and Mashar Hamsa as costume designer.
