Vir Das Bags International Emmy Award For Best Comedy

Vir Das marked history by bagging the International Emmy Award for the Best Unique comedy category. He shared the award with Derry Girls – Season 3. Mr. Das won the award for his Netflix show Vir Das: Landing, which is currently streaming.

The award ceremony, which celebrates the excellence from television, underscored Mr. Das’ talent in comedy. Along with Das, Ektha Kapoor won the International Emmy Directorate Award. Shefali Shah was nominated for ‘Best Actress category for her role in Delhi Crimes and Jim Sarbh was nominated for Best Actor.

While receiving the award, he thanked India for the “laughter”.

Vir Das is carving out his own phenomenal path with his talents. Born to Ranu Das and Madhur Das in Dehradun, he was brought up in Nigeria and India. With hosting a TV show on Zoom, Vir Das started his journey on Television. The show he first hosted was Is Route Ki Sabhi Linein Maast Hain. He then hoped to his own stand-up comedy late night show, Ek Rahin Vir. Mr. Das’s career is filed with creative yet humorous plot lines which reserved strong language for politics. He made himself known to the world through his Netflix special, Abroad Understanding, through which he became the first Indian comedian with a comedy special on Netflix.

Vir Das made it to the frontline with tow controversies. One was in 2021, when he performed a comedy monologue Two Indias at Kennedy Centre. During his performance, Mr. Das drew strong contrast between India’s rich vs poor by criticising politicians and the ‘democratic backsliding’ along with pointing out the divisions in Bollywood and cricket teams.

While talking on the topic of women, Mr. Das made a remark that, “I come from an India where we worship women during the day and gang-rape them at night”. Although the performance received standing ovation, back in India, he was welcomed with seven police complaints against him. The cases included ‘Insulting India on foreign countries’ and was filed by politicians of the country.

Another controversy on Mr. Das’s name came in 2022. Mumbai police FIR against him and two other persons along with Netflix, the online streaming platform. The issue was due to complaint filed by a theatre producer named Ashvin Gidwani of AGP World. The complaint was about Mr. Das re-using materials from his previous show in his Netflix special.
