Govt Selling Onions At Rs 35/kg In Delhi, Mumbai Amid Price Surge

With a sharp 47% spike in onion prices, the government has taken action to bring prices under control. The National Cooperative Consumer’s Federation (NCCF) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation (NAFED) have started selling onions at Rs 35 per kg through dedicated mobile vans operating in Delhi and Mumbai.

Both organisations, managing the government’s buffer stock of 4.7 lakh tonnes of onions, are overseeing sales through their outlets and mobile vans. Onions are being offered at 38 retail points in the Delhi-NCR region and in areas like Parel and Malad in Mumbai.

Subsidised onions will also be available through e-commerce platforms and in Kendriya Bhandar and Mother Dairy’s SAFAL outlets.

Currently, onion prices in Delhi’s retail markets have surpassed Rs 60 per kilogram, varying based on quality and location.

Following the initiative, Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi revealed that the government plans to expand the distribution network for onions.

Starting next week, more cities will be included, with a second phase launching in Kolkata, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Raipur. Nationwide distribution is expected to begin by the third week of September.

As of September 4, the average retail price of onions was Rs 49.21 per kilogram, marking a 47.29% rise from Rs 33.41 per kilogram one year ago. Wholesale prices have also risen sharply, with the national average wholesale price reaching Rs 4,158.71 per quintal, a 62.40% jump from Rs 2,560.19 per quintal in the same period last year.
