Karnataka Orders Only First 2 Stanza Of Vande Mataram To Be Sung In State Events

Bengaluru, Karnataka: Karnataka government had ordered that only the  first two stanzas of Vande Mataram will be sung in government events in the state. In the order, it is said that the government considered the need to maintain uniformity, respect and proper etiquette in the playing, singing of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ in accordance with the nature and context of various government programmes.

The statement further noted that all six stanzas of the national song will be recited at events attended by the President of India, Prime Minister, or Governor of Karnataka.

After the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Act, 2026 was passed by Parliament in July, asking to sing complete Vande Mataram stanzas. The Centre made it mandatory to sing the full Vande Mataram at public gatherings and official events through the bill, sparking ontroversy recently.

Congress last month had decided to follow its 1937 resolution that only the first two stanzas will be sung at party events. The Congress government in Karnataka under the leadership of DK Shivakumar took the party’s stand opposing the union government’s order.
