Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s son Dushyant Singh has been renominated as the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP)’s candidate for the Jhalawar-Baran Lok Sabha constituency. Mr Dushyant Singh is the three-term MP from the constituency and the party has decided to provide ticket for the fourth time from the constituency.

The party has retained several sitting MPs and given tickets to leaders who switched to the saffron camp from Congress recently as it announced its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. However, Dushyant Singh’s fourth nomination is learnt to be considering his performance in the 2019 general elections from the constituency as he significantly beefed up his image among the electorate.

Mr Dushyant Singh comes from a family with a rich political legacy and is also the grandson of the Maharaja of Gwalior Jivaji Rao Scindia. He completed his postgraduate degree in Business Administration from Johnson & Wales University in the United States.

Jhalawar Baran is one of the strongholds of the ruling BJP and the party has improved its vote share significantly over the past decades, which saw the sitting MP emerging victorious in 2009 with a relative margin of 52,841 and then in 2014 with more than two lakh majority. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he was re-elected for the third term with a margin of four and a half lakh votes, bolstering his political clout in the constituency. Vasundhara Raje in 2023 said that she felt to retire now, suggesting her son Dushyant Singh’s emergence as a popular MP.

Mr Dushyant Singh has also got into allegations of illegal transactions. In 2015, his company Niyant Heritage Hotels Pvt Ltd allegedly violated the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). But he dismissed the allegations saying that the accusations were intended to malign his image.
