Ahead of the 54th GST council meeting, the Delhi Minister Atishi targeted the central government over the continuous reduction in research grants from the budget and the high GST imposed on research. The GST council meeting is scheduled to be held on September 9.

The Delhi Education Minister while talking to the ANI said, “Central government is continuously reducing the number of research grants from its budget and on the other hand, when education institutions are bringing the research grants on their own, then 18% GST is being imposed on them….If an institute like IIT Delhi is researching certain types of vehicles, aircraft and medical equipment, then why GST is imposed on it?”

Atishi said to oppose any GST imposition-related proposal on research today in the 54th GST council meeting. “In today’s meeting, if there is talk of imposing any kind of GST on research grants given to the institutions, then we will strongly oppose it”, she said.

The AAP leader also talked about raising payment-related issues where there is a proposal of imposition of GST on payments below Rs 2000 made through payment gateways. “This will have a huge impact on small business and start-ups”, Atishi said.

The Delhi minister also said to oppose the GST implementation on Health Insurance and Life Insurance and Insurance for people with some mental disability, in consonence with the Punjab government.
