Washington Freedom rode on a brilliant half-century from opener Travis Head (54) to clinch victory against Los Angeles Knight Riders at the Church Street Park, Morrisville at the Major League Cricket 2024 on Sunday.
However, early in the innings, Head faced a major blow as his bat was broken with a short-pitched delivery from LAKR all-rounder Andre Russell. The incident took place in the penultimate delivery of the second over when the Australian World Cup winner tried to pull one towards the on-side but the delivery from the West Indies all-rounder hit the middle of his bat and broke off.

Head continued to lead the chase for the Washington Freedom with his 32-ball knock which included two boundaries and six sixes. He was well-accompanied by his Australian teammate and captain Steven Smith who scored 42 runs off 36 deliveries. His innings was laced with two boundaries and as many hits over the fence.
Courtesy of the knocks from Head and Smith, the Freedom’s chased down the target in the 16th over with eight wickets to spare.
“It was good, we have been looking for the complete performance, pretty close to it. We bowled and fielded well and then it was a dominant chase at the end. Just gut feel and when the left-hander came in, initially Maxi was not supposed to bowl and then he came in and bowled really well. Thought it was a 160 wicket, 129 and we went in and were positive with the bat. Got a little partnership there, Travs takes the game on and he played beautifully, allows the other batter to take his time and not think about other things,” Smith said.
