Edited by Uzma Parveen

UGC chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar said via X that the National Testing Agency (NTA) is working to launch the National Eligibility Test (NET) application process for the June 2024 session from next week. Notably, the University Grant Commission conducts the National Eligibility Test (NET) through NTA.

Additionally, UGC also announced that the NET score will be valid to gain admission into PhD admission from the 2024-25 session. Now the universities will not have to conduct separate examinations for admission into PhD programs instead the NET score will be used.

While sharing the information, the UGC chairman writes, “From the academic session 2024-2025, all universities can use the NET score for admission to Ph.D. programs in place of entrance tests conducted by the different universities/HEIs.” Mentioning the NET application process, he said, “NTA is working on launching the NET application process for the June 2024 session sometime next week.”

Notably, NET is conducted twice a year, in June and December. Currently, the NET scores are used to award Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and eligibility for appointment as Assistant Professor for those with a Master’s degree.

Now the candidates will be declared eligible in three categories instead of the earlier two.

  • Eligibility with JRF and Assistant Professor
  • Eligibility without JRF and Assistant Professor
  • Eligibility for admission to Ph.D. program only

As per the official notification, the result of NET will be declared in percentile with the marks obtained by candidates to be used for Ph.D.

Moreover, for the eligibility under categories 2 and 3 for PhD admission, 70 percent weightage will be given NET score and 30 percent to the personal interview/viva voice. Furthermore, the NET score for these two categories will be valid for 1 year only.
