Students Protest Against Govt Order To Auction Off Hyderabad University Land

Hyderabad Central University (HCU) students staged a protest against the Telangana government’s order to auction off 400 acres of university land. Tension escalated amid the stance disputed by the university and protesters, causing the detention of around 100 students.

The Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited (TSIIC) reportedly announced the auction of 400 acres of land in Kancha Gachibowli, Serilingampally Mandal, Hyderabad. The land incorporates the Mushroom Rock area in the University of Hyderabad, near its East Campus.

Kancha Gachibowli is one of the few remaining urban forests in Hyderabad. The auction was scheduled between March 8 and 15.

As per the reports, the land includes a reserve forest area with 734 plant and 220 bird species, raising significant biodiversity concerns. However, the Telangana government claims that the land does not belong to the university.

Opposition has been criticising the Telangana government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, accusing the government of prioritizing real estate profits over environmental and educational welfare, with bulldozers clearing the land at night to avoid legal challenges.
