Amid the reported acts of hatred against transgender students at the campus, the University of Hyderabad has set up a transgender committee to frame ‘The Transgender Policy’.

The office of the Registrar issued a statement with regard to safety and harmony between every student. Condemning the recent incident of hatred and discrimination, the registrar said, every individual at the campus deserves to feel secure, valued and supported to pursue education.

As per the information, two days ago clothes of two transgender women students, one of whom is a Dalit, were burnt near the boy’s hostel during alleged ragging which was followed by a protest organised by the students’ union on the campus, in front of the administrative block. Both the transwomen students alleged that it was an instance of deliberate transphobic aggression and casteism.

One of the concerned transgender women is also a member of Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), which is known as Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH). She reportedly told about submitting complaints six months ago also to the administration against members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) for assault. But no action was taken by the administration, she informed.

The university had also affirmed about the various redressal mechanisms to investigate incidents of discrimination on the campus.

According to the 2011 census, total literacy rate among transgender people is 56.1%, which is around 4.8 lakh people, compared to the national average of 74.04%. Everyone has the right to self-identify as transgender, regardless of medical treatment, according to the historic NALSA ruling.

According to the ruling, all transgender individuals have a right to appropriate education. Educational institutions are required under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2019 to offer transgender students an inclusive education and to provide them with the necessary facilities.

Government accommodations and education for transgender, gender non-conforming, and intersex children at residential government schools and colleges are mandated by the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Rules, 2020.
