Priyanka Gandhi will make her electoral debut from Wayanad as Rahul Gandhi decided to keep Raebareli.
In two major announcements on Monday, the Congress revealed that Rahul Gandhi will give up the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat in Kerala to remain as the MP from the family bastion of Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh.
Party president Mallikarjun Kharge, speaking after a high-level Congress meeting and flanked by the Gandhi siblings, explained that the decision on which constituency to vacate was made now as the deadline for doing so is Tuesday. Kharge stated that the party decided Rahul Gandhi should keep the Raebareli seat because it has been close to him and his family for generations. He emphasized that both the people of the constituency and those in the Congress felt this would be beneficial for the party. Additionally, while Rahul Gandhi has received love from the people of Wayanad, rules do not permit him to retain the seat. Consequently, Priyanka Gandhi will contest from Wayanad.
Kharge highlighted Priyanka Gandhi’s statement, “ladki hoon, lad sakti hoon” (I am a girl, I can fight), affirming that she can indeed fight from Wayanad now. He also expressed gratitude to Priyanka Gandhi for the Congress’ success in Amethi, Raebareli, and other constituencies.
When asked about Kharge’s earlier light-hearted claim that he would initiate disciplinary action if Rahul Gandhi did not follow the Congress Working Committee’s decision, the party president attempted to deflect. However, Rahul Gandhi humorously interjected that “a threat has been given,” eliciting laughter.
