Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath acknowledged that overconfidence among party workers and candidates cost the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in the state. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, he said, the BJP maintained pressure on the opposition in Uttar Pradesh, securing electoral victories in 2014, 2017, 2019, and 2022.

“The BJP managed to secure a similar percentage of votes in 2024 as in previous elections. However, vote shifting and overconfidence hurt our expectations. As a result, the opposition, which was decimated in previous elections, is now boasting. The opposition, which was on ventilator support, has now got some oxygen,” Adityanath said.

Addressing the state working committee meeting at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, with BJP chief JP Nadda in attendance, Adityanath urged party officials to intensify their efforts to reclaim the party’s dominance in the state.

He called on Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, MLAs, MLCs, district panchayat presidents, mayors, block chiefs, chairpersons, and others to begin preparations for the upcoming assembly bypolls for 10 seats and the 2027 assembly elections.

Adityanath reminded them of the BJP’s success in the 2023 municipal elections, noting that the party secured all 17 mayoral seats, the most municipal seats overall, and the highest number of chairman and councilor positions.

“We won by-elections in Azamgarh and Rampur (in 2022). The BJP flag will fly in all the upcoming by-elections for the 10 assembly seats. We must start working for it now. This should be our resolution from today,” he said.

Reflecting on the 2022 elections, he recalled, “The opposition resorted to violence after the elections; our workers felt that our government’s mafia-free UP agenda was about taking these goons to task.”

“Today, with your support, we have succeeded in making UP mafia-free. Additionally, the wait of 500 years ended when Shri Ramlala was seated in his temple in Ayodhya. BJP workers do not need to retreat under any circumstances,” he added.

In the recent Lok Sabha polls, the BJP won 33 seats in Uttar Pradesh, down from the 62 seats it won in 2019. The Congress won six seats, while its INDIA bloc ally Samajwadi Party claimed 37 seats of the 80 seats in UP.
