Actor Gouri Kishan, who’s busy promoting her upcoming film Others, recently blasted a reporter for asking a “body-shaming” question to her. The actor called the question “highly disrespectful and stupid”. The video has taken social media by storm, sparking heated debate on the issue. Users on social media are busting out in anger at the journalist while praising the actor for standing up to the questions in a calm tone.

Journalists, celebrities, among others, have taken out to social media expressing their support for Gowri, drawing prompt attention and online discussions, questioning the media ethics and pointing out the silence of her male colleagues.

Celebrity singer Chinmayi Sripaada lauded Gauri, stating she did an amazing job. “The moment you call out a disrespectful and an unnecessary question — a lot of shouting happens. So proud that someone so young stood her ground and pushed back. No male actor gets asked what his weight is,” she wrote on X, wondering if she has no idea why they asked an actress.

Filmmaker Leena Manimekalai opined that the journalists who ask such misogynistic questions should be cut down from their phallic authority and show their place unapologetically. “Shame on the other journalists and all the people in the room who remained silent.” You are the actual sleeper cell of systemic misogyny that continues to enjoy its glory,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

Nabila Jamal, a media professional, appreciated the actor for standing up for herself.  “A Tamil YouTuber asked actor Gowri Kishan about her weight in the film. She immediately called him out, saying it’s sad that someone claiming to be a journalist was more interested in her weight than her challenges as an actor. What’s worse, the YouTuber argued back, trying to justify his question, and everyone else in the room tried to convince her instead of calling him out More power to this girl for not buckling,” she wrote.

Dhanya Rajendran, editor-in-chief of The News Minutes, observed that the director should have asked this journalist to stop it and should have supported the actor. She further recalled a similar incident in which a male journalist asked the Coimbatore COP if the rape victim was fully naked or partially naked.

“Journalism has lost its ground,” lamented BJP leader Khushbu Sundar, noting that the so-called journalists take the profession to the gutters. “How much a woman weighs is none of their business. And asking the hero about it?? What a shame! Kudos to the young #GowriShankar who stood her ground and gave it back,” Khushbu wrote on X. Actresses Venba and Richa Chadha also praised Gowri, noting that she herself is a journalism graduate, and a really smart one at it. “Having known her even before her fame, all my memories of her are just her being nice, sweet and a sensible person. Shame on that journalist to double down on this,” Venba wrote on X.
