An Imphal based civil body on Wednesday banned a celebrated Manipuri actor from acting and social functions, sending surprise and upset to the state”s film fraternity.

Actress Soma Laishram is imposed with a ban of three Years by Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) for passionately addressing the turmoil in Manipur in an event on September 16.

Ms Laishram was attending a beauty pageant on Saturday in which she made comments on the ongoing ethnic clash in Manipur and appealed peace.

The group, Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) alleged her of taking part as a show stopper in the Delhi pageant despite a general appeal it made to the people and personal advice to her to desist from partaking in such programmes when Manipur is facing severe tensions.

“As everyone must be aware, my motherland, my homeland, Manipur is still burning for the past four months. And people being shot… people dying… houses being burned down… Internet ban for four months. National media has blind eye on us”, she said at the pageant.

“And our mothers are still sleeping on the streets to protect our lands. I am off words now, describing the horror facing in Manipur for the past four months”, she added.

“Today I would like to raise my voice to all my brothers and sisters of North East and also my fellow Indians to speak up… speak up against the violence happening in Manipur for the past four months”, Ms Laishram said in conclusion.

KKL, through an official statement, accused Soma of defying their requests and disrespecting the suffering of the people in Manipur by participating in the event.

“The organisation had advised her personally to desist from participating in such celebrations while Manipur is still burning and dead bodies of fellow Meiteis are still lying rotting for four months now”, reads the statement.

The ban limits her from acting and engaging in social functions for the next three years.

However the Manipuri film groups have come up and expressed support for Ms Laishram. The Film Forum Manipur (FFM), the umbrella body for all film organizations in the state, expressed dissatisfaction with KKL”s decision and vowed to work towards a resolution, says reports.

Soma Laishram is an Indian actress and singer who appears in Manipuri films. She is a native of Imphal in Manipur. Nurei, Hoo Chaage, Loibataare Ta Raju, and Chanu IPS are some of her famous movies.
