Akhilesh Yadav Slams Government Over Blocked JP Narayan Centre; BJP Cites "Construction"

Authorities in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday closed the Jai Prakash Narayan International Centre (JPNIC), with police being deployed ahead of Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav’s scheduled visit on Friday to commemorate Jayaprakash Narayan’s birth anniversary.

The SP chief had arrived at JPNIC on Thursday evening after the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) denied him permission to visit the site. Yadav slammed the UP government for blocking the entrance, noting that the BJP government was preventing him from honoring a great leader.

Reacting to Yadav’s visit to honor Prakash, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari today alleged that the former UP chief minister was doing politics, justifying the denial of permission due to the construction work being held at the JPNIC. “Had Akhilesh Yadav had good intentions, he could have paid tribute to Jai Prakash Narayan even in his office. Today, SP has forgotten the ideals of Jai Prakash Narayan. Had they followed those ideals, they would not have forged an alliance with the Congress party,” the BJP spokesperson said.

Bhandari then said that the entire INDI alliance is resorting to political stunts after the defeat in Haryana. “They have understood that people of the country want the ideals of Jai Prakash Narayan to be taken forward by PM Narendra Modi. Jai Prakash Narayan had an anti-emergency ideology. But Akhilesh Yadav forgot it and forged an alliance with Congress…Akhilesh Yadav knows that he is going to lose in the upcoming by-polls. So, to divert attention from this defeat, he will try to play victim cards one after the other. Arvind Kejriwal is trying the same in Delhi because they lost deposits in Haryana,” the BJP spokesperson was heard saying in a video shared by the news agency ANI.

The BJP leader further asked Yadav if he believed in the ideals of Jai Prakash Narayan, why did he forge ties with “emergency party Congress?”

After being denied permission to visit JPNIC, the SP leader accused the government of trying to hide something behind a “tin boundary.”

“Why are we not allowed to pay tribute to a great leader? This happens every year on Jayaprakash Narayan’s birth anniversary when SP members gather to honor him. What is the government hiding? This site is not under construction—it’s going to be sold,” asked Akhilesh Yadav.

He also slammed the government for putting barriers to prevent people from visiting Jayaprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary, alleging the BJP’s hatred towards freedom fighters such as Jayaprakash Narayan.

The SP chief on Friday took to his social media platform, and wrote, “Whether it is the BJP people or their government, “their every action is a symbol of negativity. To prevent the Samajwadi people from garlanding the statue of ‘Jai Prakash Narayan Ji’ on his birth anniversary like last time, barricades have been put up around our private residence to stop them.”
