The SP chief raised serious allegations against the BJP government, claiming that JCBs were used to destroy evidence at the site of the stampede.

New Delhi: Accusing the “double-engine government” of the BJP of concealing the real death toll in the Maha Kumbh stampede in Prayagraj, Samajwadi Party (SP) Chief Akhilesh Yadav, on Tuesday, demanded an all-party meeting to be called to give clarification about the arrangements for Maha Kumbh.

“While the government is continuously giving budget figures, please also give the figures of those who died in Maha Kumbh,” he said during the budget session in the Lok Sabha.

According to the government, 30 people died and 60 were injured in the tragic stampede that broke out on January 29. However, the opposition claims that the actual death toll is much higher.

He further requested the centre to present the figures of those who died in Maha Kumbh, treatment of injured, availability of medicines, doctors, food, water, and transport.

The SP chief requested the central government hand over Maha Kumbh Mela’s administration and management to the Indian Army, expressing his loss of faith  in the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government’s handling of the event.

“We ask the double-engine government, if there was no guilt, then why were the figures suppressed, hidden, and erased?” the former UP chief minister asked.

He called for “strict punitive action” against those responsible for hiding the ‘truth.’ The SP chief raised serious allegations against the BJP government, claiming that JCBs were used to destroy evidence at the site of the stampede.

The Samajwadi Party alleges that hundreds of people are still missing. Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav claimed that over 15,000 people have reported their family members missing since the stampede at one of the largest religious gatherings in the world.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi gave an adjournment notice in the Lok Sabha stating that due to inadequate safety measures, overcrowding, and lapses in crowd management, the Maha Kumbh turned into a tragedy that shook the entire nation.

Earlier, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday gave a Zero Hour notice in the Rajya Sabha regarding the Maha Kumbh stampede.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday rejected a plea seeking action against Uttar Pradesh officials and asked the petitioner, Advocate Vishal Tiwari, to approach the Allahabad High Court. It also said that a judicial constitution has been constituted to investigate the same.
