
Lok Sabha Passes Resolution On President's Rule In Manipur At 2 AM (image:screen grab from x.com/AmitShah)
New Delhi: On early Thursday, the Lok Sabha adopted a Statutory Resolution confirming the imposition of President’s rule in Manipur. Union Home Minister Amit Shah adopted the statutory resolution regarding the President’s rule around 2 am followed by a discussion.
During the discussion eight opposition law makers spoke, and later Shah responded. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said his party supported the President’s Rule in Manipur but it should be used to restore “peace and health” in the region.

In response to the short debate, Shah said that the government has taken all possible measures to bring back normalcy in Manipur. He then said that there has been no violence in Manipur in the past four months and added that talks were on with both Meitei and Kuki communities for a peaceful solution.
“By and large the situation is peaceful. As long as people are in camps, I would not say the situation is satisfactory. The government is taking all possible steps to restore peace in Manipur,” Shah said.
The Centre imposed President’s Rule initially on February 13, 2025 under under Article 356 of the Constitution in Manipur. As per this article, the proclamation of the President’s Rule necessitated parliamentary approval within two months.

The President’s rule was imposed four days after chief minister Biren Singh’s resignation. He resigned on February 9 amid mounting discord and the threat of a no-confidence motion. The assembly has not been dissolved and currently is “under suspended animation.”
Manipur is not new to experiencing President’s rule and the current one marks 11th time in State’s history. The first time Manipur encountered President’s Rule was from January 12 to March 19, 1967 – for 66 days. The longest period the State underwent President’s Rule was for 2 years and 157 days – from October 17, 1969 to March 22, 1972.
