Who is Tanya Mittal - The Influencer Facing Backlash Over Kumbh Stampede Claims

Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: Influencer Tanya Mittal is making headlines for claiming that a second stampede had occurred in Prayagraj’s Maha Kumbh Mela and she had personally intervened to rescue people stuck in the chaotic scene. Mittal is an Instagram influencer and an Uttar Pradesh tourism promoter as well.

In a video posted on Instagram, she claimed that she heard screams of women and children while Mittal and her team were at a high point. She said that she got caught in the second stampede when she went downstairs to rescue the people trapped.

“We went down, and I got caught in the stampede. At one point, my breath choked. I couldn’t breathe. It couldn’t see or understand anything. It was impossible to get out of there… I almost felt like it was the last day of my life,” she said tearfully.

Mittal further claimed that she had managed to take some people to safety at a nearby Haldiram store.

Interestingly, her video about the second stampede came shortly after Mittal praised the arrangements at Maha Kumbh in another Instagram video. She can be heard saying that there was no crowd at the VVIP area.

Netizens were quick to slam Mittal, calling her out on spreading misinformation. “Of course, if you’re staying in a VVIP cottage, spending ₹50,000 a night, and getting special treatment, you won’t face any difficulties—because people will literally be at your service! But that is NOT the reality for thousands of pilgrims and locals who are struggling with overcrowding, chaos, and even stampedes,” emphasised an Instagram user.

Her video about the second stampede has also received much criticism. Several users criticised her for “drama” and mocking her previous video about praising the VVIP treatment. Soon after that, she shared another video recounting the experience with the media. That didn’t go well with netizens either. “Vip VIP person and VIP treatment lene ke bad log aise hi karte Hain,” remarked one user.

Since then, Mittal has posted several videos and photos of other people thanking her for her help. Social media folks, however, criticised Mittal for “taking advantage of this regrettable incident to get a lot of views and subscribers.”

After at least 30 people died and 60 others were injured in a brutal stampede at Prayagraj’s Maha Kumbh on January 30, reports of a second stampede occurring just 3 km away shortly after the first one have surfaced. According to Deccan Herald, at least seven people died in this stampede which took place hours after after the stampede at the Sangam.
