Months after reports of rumours that senior Congress leader Shashi is planning to switch to the BJP, which the Thiruvananthapuram MP rejected categorically, an internal rift is brewing in the Grand Old Party. Senior party leader Udit Raj took a jibe at Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday for his words praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi government over operation Sindoor. Udit Raj asked Shashi Tharoor that how could he denigrate the “golden history of Congress” by saying that before PM Modi India never crossed Line of Control (LoC) and International border.

While leading an all-party delegation to the United States as part of Operation Sindoor’s global outreach, the Congress MP hailed the 2016 surgical strike and 2019’s Balakot strike. “What has changed in recent years is that the terrorists have also realised they will have a price to pay; on that, let there be no doubt. When, for the first time, India breached the Line of Control between India and Pakistan to conduct a surgical strike on a terror base, a launch pad — the Uri strike in September 2016,” Shashi Tharoor said.

He also stated that India, however, did not cross the LoC even during the Kargil War, but went a step further by crossing not only the LoC but even the International Border to avenge the deaths of Indian jawans in the Pulwama attacks.

Taking to his social platform X, Udit Raj asked Shashi Tharoor that how could he denigrate the golden history of Congress by saying that before PM Modi , India never crossed LOC and International border .

“In 1965 Indian Army entered Pakistan at multiple points, which completely surprised the Pakistanis in the Lahore sector. In 1971 , India tore Pakistan in two pieces and during UPA Govt several surgical strikes were unleashed but drum beating was not done to encash politically . How could you be so dishonest to the party which gave you so much,” the Congress leader wrote.

Notably, calling Tharoor a super spokesperson, Udit Raj pointed out the MP is doing a better job of praising PM Modi than any BJP member, while noting that the union government is taking undue credit for the Army’s action. Earlier governments were not like the current one. “This government won’t do anything, but they will still take credit for it,” news agency ANI quoted Raj as saying.

The Congress leadership is at odd with Shashi Tharoor remarks in Panama as the party’s stated position has been that six surgical strikes were conducted during the UPA regime, which were never publicised. The party reportedly believes that Tharoor is giving overfire to the Narendra Modi government post Operation Sindoor, despite the party continues to raise concerns over the sudden ceasefire.

The all-party delegation to Panama comprises other parliamentarians, including Sarfaraz Ahmed, G M Harish Balayogi, Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejasvi Surya, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Mallikarjun Devda, Milind Deora and former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

Shashi Tharoor appears unequivocal and unwavering in his praise of the steps taken by the Narendra Modi government, and earlier too he had also praised several policies of the ruling dispensation, drawing flak from the Grand Old Party. Congress has several times distanced itself from its MPs’ remarks.
