Maldives Suspends Ministers Over "Insulting" Remarks On PM Modi's Visit To Lakshadweep

Amid the ongoing row over the Maldives minister’s comment after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, the Maldives government suspends ministers. The Island earlier issued a  statement over the issue and said, “the Government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals”.

It said, the opinions on the issue were personal and do not represent the views on the Island’s government. It further added that, “the relevant authorities of the government will not hesitate to take actions against those who make such derogatory remarks”. the statement said, Maldives government believes that the freedom of expression should be exercised in democratic manner, refraining from spreading “hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationship between the Maldives and its international partners”.

In the latest statement issued by the Maldives government, it is said that, “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today issued a stand of the government of India in relation to some posts on social media that are insulting to neighboring India…those who made such posts on social media while in government positions have now been suspended from their jobs”. The statement however did not reveal the names of the ministers who got suspended.

The “derogatory remarks” made by the Maldives Minister has sparked online row, and boycott calls to Maldives. As a result, several Indians who were preparing to go to Maldives has cancelled their tickets. Celebrities like Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan, John Abraham and Sachin Tendulkar took to their social media platform, encouraging to explore Indian Islands.

John Abraham stressed on India’s concept of “Aditi Devo Bhava” (Guest is God), while urged to visit Lakshadweep, which is a must-visit destination.

 

Sachin Tendulkar too emphasised the “Aditi Devo Bhava” philosophy of India, and urged to visit Sindhudurg. He said, “India is blessed with beautiful coastlines and pristine islands”, and added that there are so much to explore and “so many memories waiting to be created.

 

Salman Khan said it is “so cool to see our Hon PM Narendrabhai Modi” at the stunning beaches of Lakshadweep. He further added that the bees part of it was “yeh hamare India mein hain” (it is in our India).
