Boston, US: Nita Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation delivered a powerful pitch for India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics. Speaking at the Harvard India Conference on Indian Business, Policy and Culture, in Boston, Ambani stressed that India is set to become the “third-largest economy in the world.” She said that India must host the Olympics and that the country has the ability to host the “greenest Olympics ever”.
“If you look at the 10 largest economies of the world, nine countries have hosted the Olympics, but only India has not. So I find that really odd. We would wish to see the Olympics being hosted in our country. It will be our pride to host that. So that is the reason, I think the Prime Minister also mentioned that India will bid for the 2036 Olympics…,” Ambani said.

Ambani also mentioned sustainability in India’s Olympic vision and said how the country intends to make them the greenest and most sustainable Olympics. “I think we are planning to host a sustainable Olympics where we are planning to refurbish, reuse our existing stadiums and existing campuses. If we bid for it and get it, I assure you that we’ll be the greenest Olympics ever…I think India is at the right time now to host the Olympics,” she added.
However, Ambani’s evocative pitch received lots of backlashes in the social media. Slamming her bid, Business journalist and activist Sucheta Dalal in post on X, raised questions concerning poverty rate and dismal infrastructure facilities in country.
“Good point. Can she also cite per capita income in the top 10 economies, their population, the number of people living in poverty in each of them and which city can provide just minimal decent infrastructure-public transport- cleanliness to athletes and visitors so that we are not deeply embarrassed?? Serious question,” Dalal inquired.
Similarly, netizens also criticised Ambani for her lack of awareness about the reality of India.
A user named Jayant Bhandari wrote on X: “Wealthy, influential Indians depress me no end. I find them repulsive. They have no vision, passion, or interest in the larger society. They are the private versions of demagogues.”
“Big “No”. We hardly win any medals in the Olympics. We will waste money in making game infra where this money can be used to maintain and upgrade current crumbling infrastructure. Let’s be sensible and look at our GDP per capita for a change,” Business Consultant Ishwar Singh said in a post.

Another user named Desi Verse observed, “Mad obsession with holding Olympics, when per capita gdp of 90% population is abysmal. And the taxes, gst & inflation don’t leave any savings. Unemployment is skyrocketing. If there’s so much money, why not help country survive ‘amritkaal’ ?”
In the keynote address, Ambani has also expressed her feelings on the inclusion of Cricket in the upcoming 2028 Olympics. She is a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) since 2016.
