'Not Giving Reason': SC Justice Ujjal Bhuyan Flags Lack Of Transparency In Collegium Appointments
New Delhi: Supreme Court justice Ujjal Bhuyan on Saturday, August 1, flagged concerns over the opacity in collegium appointment. Pointing out the lack of transparency and opacity in the judicial appointment, the judge said by not providing reasons for the selection, the collegium is doing disservice to judges and goes against public interest.
“By not doing this, we are allowing some kind of people who come inside the judiciary and will later go on to describe a group of people as ‘ants’,’ the judge said, underlining that it is completely unconstitutional. The judge also pointed out that the such opacity in collegium resolutions also create space for undesirable candidates to enter the judiciary who then make unconstitutional remarks.

Justice Bhuyan also cited the example of a controversial speech given by a former Allahabad High Court judge in 2024 at a VHP event, when he had made certain veiled references against Muslims.
