Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the BJP national council meeting today in Delhi and expressed his confidence of winning the coming Lok Sabha elections and coming back to power for a third term. As he was telling the office bearers of his party, PM Modi said that he has come up with a resolve for the nation and added that “If I had worried only about my own house, houses for crores of poor people would not have been built today”.
According to the government data released in June 2023, over 3.4 crore houses had been built in the rural area for the last nine years. The government had initiated a housing project named Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana in 2016

However, during the 2018 election campaign, Prime Minister Modi had boasted about his government’s achievement of building 1.25 crores of houses. Back then, the prime minister was slammed for making alleged false claim that the the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had in its 4-year tenure built only 25 lakh houses. But the days following the prime minister”s statement about UPA tenure, many reports by prominent media houses refuted the prime minister’s claims, stating that the UPA government had built over 118.5 lakh houses till March 2014 during the second phase (2010-2014) of Bharat Nirman Programme (BNP), an initiative the UPA government started in 2005, the NEWSclick revealed.
The Congress had accused the BJP of lying about the number of houses built during the UPA tenure. Former congress leader and Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan had said, “Nobody can compete with Modi when it comes to speaking untruth. Devotees of Saibaba such as me are sad that the Prime Minister speaks lies even in Saibaba”s Shirdi.” “Under the Indira Awas Yojana, between 2004 and 2013, during the UPA government, 2.24 crore houses were constructed. Which means almost 25 lakh houses were completed every year,” Mr Chavan claimed in 2018, NDTV reported.
However, as the general election nears, political parties and leaders are making promises and guarantees, heralding the heat of the democratic exercise in the world”s largest democratic country.
