The sitting MP Jyotsna Mahant has been nominated as the Congress candidate from Chhattisgarh”s Korba Lok Sabha constituency. Born in 1953, Jyotsana Mahant completed her BSc in Zoology from Bhopal University. Married to prominent Congress politician and Chhattisgarh Assembly opposition leader Charan Das Mahant, she has been working as a social worker before joining politics. She made her foray into electoral politics in 2019 and emerged victorious defeating BJP’s Jyoti Nand Dubey with a relative majority.
Charan Das Mahant first became an MP from the Korba constituency in 2009. However, in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he was defeated by BJP’s Banshilal Mahto. By fielding Jyotsna Mahant, the party could wrest it back from the saffron party in 2019.
Notably, as the Congress lost the state in the 2023 assembly election, Jyotsana Mahant would probably face even tougher competition in the 2024 general elections.
The Congress party has a significant vote bank in the constituency but during the assembly election last year, out of the total eight assembly segments under the Korba Lok Sabha seat came under the BJP. Four out of the eight assembly segments belong to Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates. This is likely to pose considerable threat to the Congress party’s incumbent MP as she fielded again.
Jyotsna Mahant had a total 71 percent of attendance and participated in seven debates. She has asked a total of 116 questions, making her one of the vocal parliamentarian.
Notably, the social works and the developmental project of Jyotsana Mahant are believed to be one of the deciding factors to lift the image of the Jyotsna Mahant. The BJP has fielded Saroj Pandey for Korba when it announced its candidates. The
