Baba Sivanand, India's Oldest Man And Padma Shri Awardee Dies At 128

Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh: Spiritual guru and Padma Shri awardee Baba Sivanand died in Varanasi on Saturday night. He was reportedly 128 years old when he took his final breath at the BHU Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on April 30 after experiencing health complications.

Considered a wonder by many of his followers for his disease-free life post 100s, Baba Sivanand was known for helping the poor and living a life of extreme austerity and discipline. He received the Padma Shri award in 2022 for his contributions to spirituality and yoga.

Following a strict lifestyle, such as eating only boiled foods, waking up at 3 am daily, practicing yoga, among other things, are what made him to maintain robust health even in his 100s. He always ate only half a stomach of food.

Baba’s body has been kept at his residence in Kabirnagar Colony for the public to pay their last respects.

He was born on August 8, 1896, in the Sylhet district of present-day Bangladesh. He reportedly lost both his parents due to poverty.

In a social media post on X, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid tribute, and wrote, “It is very sad that famous yoga guru of Kashi ‘Padma Shri’ Swami Shivanand ji, who made an unparalleled contribution in the field of Yoga, passed away. Humble tribute to him!” He also called Baba’s life an “inspiration for the whole society.”
