After being disqualified from the wrestling final in Paris Olympics 2024 due to overweight rules, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat today reached Delhi’s IGI Airport. People, including her family members and the public, gathered outside the airport to welcome the wrestler. Phogat was seen in tears as she received a grand welcome on her return. Congress MP Deepender Hooda was present at the airport to welcome the sportswoman who brought several medals to the country.

Notably, some of the X handles known for propagating right-wing politics seem to be unhappy with the way Vinesh was welcomed. An X handle, Bala, slammed the Indian wrestler, sharing a picture of her being celebrated outside the airport, stating that she was disqualified and yet “doing Roadshow.”

In a post, the handle penned, “Many people wonder why India’s performance in the Olympics is lacking and why we don’t win more medals,” adding that the day the country stops celebrating such mediocre performances, things will improve! “A sad state of affairs for our country,” the handle wrote, referring to Phogat.

Another user, Mr Sinha, who introduces himself as a political commentator, Hindu right activist and proud Bharatiya, asked the ruling BJP to stop “simping for the Vinesh Phogat gang.”

“You’ll get nothing but humiliation… They’ve already chosen their side not today but long ago & you can’t change,” he wrote, asking the saffron party to “instead do something for deserving people or those who respect you.. Promote Geeta Phogat, Mahavir Phogat etc”

Some handles also attacked the wrestler, accusing her of working as a political agent after disqualifying from Olympics.

However, many in the comment sections hurled ridules at the remarks made against the Indian wrestler. A uer, Neeraj Kumar, list out some of the achievements of  Vinesh Phogat she won for the country, including gold medals and Bronze medals in the international sports competitions.

“2024 Paris Olympics Vinesh defeated top seed and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the opening round. In the quarter-finals, she got the better of former European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine before besting reigning Pan American Games champion Yusneylis Guzman of Cuba in the semis,” Kumar wrote, underscoring that Phogat  became 1st Indian woman wrestler to secure a seat in finals of olympics before she was denied opportunity for gold due to conspiracy.

“The number of medals won by Vinesh Phogat for India is far greater than medals won by all athletes of some states in India in their lifetime. Still some anti-nationals don’t acknowledge her contribution to Indian sports.” he wrote.
