UGC Former Chairman Jagadesh Kumar Mamidala Conferred With Padma Shri

University Grant Commission (UGC) former chairman Prof. M. Jagadesh Kumar Mamidala has been conferred with the Padma Shri award for his significant contribution to the field of education by the government of India. He has served as the UGC Chairman from February 2022 to April 2025.

Prof Mamidala has served as a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Delhi and remained Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University from January 2016 till 2022.

During his reign as UGC Chairman, Mamidala has introduced major educational reforms for the Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) including the 4-year graduation program, credit system in education on the pattern of foreign univesities to make Indian education competitive.

The central government on Sunday, January 25, announced Padma Awards 2026 – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country. The awards are declared in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. They will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan later this year.
