Ajit Agarkar, chief of India selectors, announced Team India”s squad today in Delhi for the Asia Cup scheduled to start from August 30 hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who have recovered from injuries, have been selected for the 17-member squad that also includes rookie left-hander Tilak Varma, who has not played ODI cricket yet.

Fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna, who made their international comebacks during the ongoing T20 International series in Ireland, were also selected along with 32 year old Indian right-arm fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who was rested for the entire tour of West Indies.

Indian pace attack also includes Mohammed Siraj and allrounders Hardik Pandya and Shardul Thakur.

Rohit Sharma will remain as the captain.

Right-handed wicket-keeper-batter and Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson has been announced as traveling stand-by player.

Team India Squad for Asia Cup 2023:

Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (VC), Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Prasidh Krishna

Traveling stand-by player: Sanju Samson

“In West Indies, we saw some real promise in terms of not just performances but the temperament,” Agarkar justified of Tilak”s inclusion in the team.

“And it gives us an opportunity to take him with the team, give him some more exposure; a left-hander again, looks very promising. So fortunately we can take 17 here, it”ll be 15 at the World Cup. So when the time comes we”ll take that decision, but at the moment it at least gives the coach and captain an opportunity to have him with the squad,” Agarkar added.
