Congress Alleges ‘Match-Fixing’ In Surat

Edited by Hiba Anvar

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh alleged ‘match fixing’ in Gujarat’s Surat Lok Sabha constituency. The BJP has opened its first account in the ongoing Lok Sabha election as the BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal has won the polls technically as all his opponents are now out of the fray. Congress leader on his post on X wrote, “the distress and anger faced by MSME owners and businesspeople in Modi’s Anyay Kaal has spooked the BJP so badly that they are attempting to “match-fix” Surat Lok Sabha”.

The BJP has been consistently winning the seat since the 1984 Lok Sabha elections.

The Surat District Election Officer rejected the Indian National Congress candidate for Surat Lok Sabha, Nilesh Kumbhani’s nomination for discrepancies in verification of signatures of three proposers. Similarly, officials rejected the nomination of Suresh Padsala, the Congress’s substitute candidate for Surat. Other all candidates withdrew their nominations except the BJP candidate.

Thus BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal won the election “unopposed” a day after the nomination of the Congress party’s Surat Lok Sabha candidate was rejected on Sunday.

Monday was the last date to withdraw nomination ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in Surat as part of phase 3 on May 7. The opposition has decided to move to the Gujarat High Court seeking a stay on the election in the Surat constituency, which is known to be the BJP bastion, reports The Indian Express.

Gujarat Congress Chief Shaktisinh Gohil has also sent out an appeal to the Election Commission for a “suo moto review”.
