IIT Bombay Held Commencement 2024 For Nearly 2489 Graduating Students

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) held Commencement 2024 at the Institute’s Convocation Hall today on May 3, 2024. A total of 2489 students including nearly 1249 undergraduates, 1005 postgraduates, and 235 PhDs attended the event. Natarajan Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company and promoter of all Tata Group companies, was the Chief Guest at the event. Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay also presented the Institute’s Report for the year 2023-24.

IIT Bombay introduced this event ‘Commencement’ last year so that the students celebrate their journey through IIT Bombay along with all their batch-mates and family members while they embark on a new phase in their lives. The event is similar to the traditional Convocation ceremony: uniformly dressed students, Academic procession, Chief Guest and Director address, photo-op with the Director, and a Pledge. However, it will be devoid of conferring degrees, medals, or special awards to the students, since they are yet to complete the requirements of graduation.

Commencement is a special event to be conducted once every year to gather all students expected to graduate in that academic year. It does not depend on the actual completion of any graduation requirements (such as courses and thesis). Participating in the Commencement event does not mean that the student has graduated. The event is to be held soon after the end semester examinations of the 2nd semester before the graduating batch leaves the campus.

The Chief Guest Mr. Natarajan Chandrasekaran in his address spoke about three fundamental aspects – Trust, Character, and Purpose that determine success in the journey of building a career. He said, “Building and cultivating trust is very essential to your success. When an organization and its colleagues trust you, they not only empower you but also embrace you. Secondly, Character is your capacity to prioritize your values over your instincts. It will enable you to be true to your principles. While trust and character will help you to be successful in your career, the Purpose that you live for will inspire and guide you and give you fulfillment,” he added.

Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri informed that IIT Bombay continues to be the top-ranked university in the country and among the best in the world. Wishing the graduating students the best in life, Prof. Chaudhuri said, “The quality of education you have received at IIT Bombay is second to none in the world but what you have learned is only a foundation – putting up a structure on the foundation is your responsibility.”

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, set up in 1958 as the second IIT is recognized worldwide as a leader in the field of engineering education and research. The Institute was granted the status of “Institution of Eminence” by the Ministry of Education on July 9, 2018.
