Audi R8 To Return As Plug-In Hybrid With Twin-Turbo V8, Most Powerful And Fastest

One of the most well-known sports vehicles of the twenty-first century is the Audi R8. The R8 was first introduced in 2007 and received a generation upgrade in 2015. With tighter pollution regulations anticipated in the upcoming years, the German automaker had previously stated that the next generation R8 would be electrified in some way to extend its lifespan.

In December 2024, the final Audi R8 of the second generation left the factory. Audi sold 45,949 R8s in two variants between 2007 and 2024. It has now been disclosed that the third-generation R8 will have a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, and it is scheduled to launch internationally in 2027. The third-gen Audi R8, debuting in 2027, features a 908 hp plug-in hybrid V8, shared with Lamborghini Temerario, enhancing performance and efficiency.

The Lamborghini Temerario’s 4.0-liter V8 PHEV drivetrain will be borrowed by the next third-generation R8. When combined with three axial-flux motors, the V8’s 789 horsepower can generate an incredible 908 horsepower. The 3.8kWh rechargeable lithium-ion battery powers the electric motors.

This powertrain’s hybrid arm contributes to improved performance, enabling an acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in under 2.7 seconds. The all-electric range is only 9.65 km, while the top speed is said to be about 338 kmph. The Temerario has all-wheel drive (AWD) thanks to two electric motors mounted on the front axle.

Between the V8 engine and the dual-clutch transmission is a third electric motor that serves as both a starter generator and a brake energy recovery device. It is anticipated that the future third-generation R8 PHEV would have the same configuration. Most likely, Audi’s Bollinger Hofe factory in Germany, where the previous R8 models were produced, would host the next edition of the sports car.

Not only the powertrain but Audi R8 will utilise the same chassis as the Lamborghini Temerario. The Temerario’s aluminum spaceframe architecture offers 25% greater torsional stiffness than previous Lamborghini models while utilizing only half the structural components. The new R8 will come in both Coupe and Spider body styles. The third-gen Audi R8 will debut in 2027 with a powerful 908 hp plug-in hybrid V8, sharing its chassis and powertrain with the Lamborghini Temerario, ensuring enhanced performance, efficiency, and modern electrification.
