Germany has increased its annual visa quota for skilled Indian professionals from 20,000 to 90,000 as Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed this decision on Friday during the 18th Asia-Pacific Conference of German Business in New Delhi.

PM Modi said that this decision aims to address Germany’s labour shortages and strengthen economic ties with India. With this, Indian professionals will have more job opportunities in Germany, especially in IT, engineering, healthcare and more. They can earn higher wages with average salaries reaching €5,400 (approximately Rs 4,92,000) per month. Additionally, Indians in Germany face a low unemployment rate of 3.7 percent. Additionally, family reunification options are also available.

Germany faces labour shortages due to an ageing population and Germany’s economic growth rate was 2.6 percent in 2022. Now, this is the 25th year of the India-Germany strategic partnership as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasised enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

A pact on labour mobility and skill recognition is set to be signed and Bilateral trade between India and  Germany stood at €18.6 billion in 2022 the increased visa quota aims to bridge this gap that may ensure industries continue to thrive, he added.

He also stated that India being “the world’s biggest democracy and fastest-growing major economy,” this partnership is crucial for Germany’s economic growth and addressing labour shortages.

Germany’s new Skilled Labour Strategy includes 30 measures to ease migration and integration for Indian workers. This move is expected to enhance Germany’s workforce with highly qualified professionals who can contribute to economic growth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “Talent, technology, innovation, and infrastructure are India’s growth tools.” India’s economic growth rate was 7.2% in 2022. With 180,000 Indians already living in Germany, this development is expected to further strengthen ties between the two nations.”
