Over 90K Indians Risk Illegal US Entry; PM Modi's Dream Of Americans' Longing For Indian Visas Recalled

Making the worrying trend of Indians risking their lives to enter the United States more visible, a recent report shows that at least 90,415 citizens tried to illegally enter America in the 12 months between October 2023 and September 2024. As per a report by the Times of India, ten Indian citizens tried to cross the border per hour through Mexico and Canada, risking the perilous journey and foreseeing a better future despite the threats of losing lives.

During the period, around 43,764 Indians were detained at the US-Canada border, making it an entry point with the highest recorded figure for Indian nationals, compared to the once major entry point, Mexico. Many have changed the route because of the increased security surveillance at the Mexico border. According to the report, the immigrants, after reaching Canada using a visitor visa, try to cross the US border by local taxis.

The US news outlet CNN reported that the number of Indian citizens illegally entering the US has increased dramatically, noting that Indians make up the third-largest group of undocumented migrants in the country. According to the report, a total of 2.9 million illegal immigrants were apprehended at US borders with Mexico and Canada in the US Fiscal Year 2024—October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024.

Notably, fact-checker and Alt co-founder Mohammed Zubair dug up a 2012 interview of Prime Minister Narendra Modi where he can be heard explaining his dream of US citizens lining up for Indian visas, in line with the dream of Swami Vivekananda.

Ironically, the people from the then Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s state, Gujarat, are one of the top constituents of the illegal migrants to the US. Moreover, the number of Indians surrendering their passports and abandoning Indian citizenship has also increased in the country.

“According to the TOI report, 90,415 Indians tried to illegally enter the USA in the 12 months between October 2023 and September 2024. That is roughly 10 Indians per hour. Of them, nearly 50% were from Gujarat. Now listen to Narendra Modi’s dream before becoming PM.
