The chip giant Nvidia  is hosting its first-ever AI summit in India that brings together industry leaders to explore the country’s potential as a global AI hub. The three-day event held from October 23 to 25 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai features a fireside chat between NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang and Reliance Industries’ Mukesh Ambani on Thursday, today.

While talking to Mukesh Ambani, Huang stated that India’s advantages in the “intelligence revolution,” with its large population, industry of computer scientists and national will to drive innovation. “To have such a large population and large industry of computer scientists at a time when this computing industry is going to become the intelligence industry is extraordinary,” he said. He also stressed that India will not just deliver CEOs to the world but also AI services.

Amid the conversation, Ambani praised Mark Zuckerberg for introducing open-source AI models and highlighted India’s aspirations to develop its own AI solutions. “I have great respect for Mark Zuckerberg for bringing open-source AI models. From India’s point of view, Llama allows all of us to develop on top of it. To start with, open-source is great,” Ambani said.

Ambani also shared Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India’s AI future. “PM Modi told me India should not export data to import intelligence. He said India should not export flour to import bread,” Ambani quoted.

Huang and Ambani’s discussion also touched upon India’s potential for AI leadership. “No one has helped India become hi-tech like you have. I know you have deep aspirations to make India deep tech. What motivates you?” Huang asked.

Ambani replied, “When you are in India, I have got to share my version of what NVIDIA meant to me. There is an important word linked to it – Vidya in Hindi, which means knowledge… We are determined to make the best LLM in Hindi.” Before the fireside chat, Huang had a brief conversation with Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, discussing martial arts and growing up in Thailand.

Jensen Huang also said that Nvidia aims to help India build powerful AI infrastructure leveraging its advanced GPUs which will enable faster adoption and development of AI technologies across industries. He said that developing AI models tailored to Indian languages is crucial for inclusive growth. NVIDIA and partners are working to create models that cater to India’s linguistic diversity, he added.

He also revealed that NVIDIA is working with Tech Mahindra to build a Hindi large language model, collaborating with Flipkart on conversational customer-service systems and partnering with Indian healthcare companies to improve patient care and research.
