Delhi Cabinet Passes Bill To Regulate Fees For 1677 Schools

Today, the Delhi Cabinet has passed the draft bill to regulate the procedure of fees for all 1677 schools in Delhi. The Delhi Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, has announced the complete guidelines to regulate fees in Delhi schools, whether they are non-aided, private, or all kinds of schools, will be prepared.

While announcing the passage of the bill, Delhi CM Rekha Gupta said, “There was a section 17 (3) regarding fees in the Delhi School Act of 1973, in which there was no guideline that the fees of private schools should not be increased and for which what power does the government have and what process should be adopted… From 1973 till today, there has been no provision on how to control the schools.”

Earlier, in 2015 the Delhi School Fee Regulation Bill was brought in but introduced stricter oversight. The recent arbitrary fees hike by the private schools in Delhi has drawn a public outcry, leading to the intervention of the Delhi government by bringing a bill. Delhi’s literacy rate at 86.3% as per the 2011 census underscores the importance of accessible education.

However, according to a 2024 Delhi government directive, schools must seek approval from the government for a fee increase. However, schools have been increasing the fees and even deterring students from attending the classes. Parents all across Delhi protested against the school practices and demanded government intervention.
