President Confirms Prof Mohammad Shakeel's Appointment As Officiating VC Of JMI

President of India Droupadi Murmu, in her capacity as the Visitor of Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), has approved the appointment of Prof Mohammad Shakeel as the Officiating Vice-Chancellor of the central university situated in New Delhi. This decision was made under the powers granted by the JMI Act, 1988, specifically Statute 2(6), according to a statement from the varsity.

Prof Shakeel, a senior professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at JMI, assumed the role on May 22, 2024. He will serve as Officiating Vice-Chancellor until a regular Vice-Chancellor is appointed.

Prof Shakeel holds BTech and MTech degrees from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and a PhD from the University of Roorkee.

He joined JMI as a Lecturer in 1986 and was promoted to Reader in 1992 and Professor in 2000. With extensive teaching and research experience, he has held several administrative positions, including Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Controller of Examinations, Director of the Centre for Distance & Online Education, and Head of the Department of Civil Engineering. He has also served on numerous important university committees.
