Reportedly, the Uttar Pradesh government has merged over 10,000 schools under the basic education department. Reportedly, now, the campuses of these schools will be used as Anganwadi centers, and the responsibility to conduct the survey has been given to the child development and nutrition department.

The Congress MP, Wayanad Priyanka Gandhi, has targeted the Uttar Pradesh government over merging the schools. She raised the issue of the alleged closure of approximately 27,000 schools, calling the decision against the Right to Education, Dalit, backward, tribal, minority, poor, and deprived sections.

After the completion of the district-level survey, the empty schools will be declared as ‘Baal Vatikas’. The survey is expected to be completed in 15 days. An all-party meeting will be convened involving Pradhan, Anganwadi workers, and parents after the schools are demarcated for shifting.

Notably, in some districts, Anganwadi centres are running in Panchayat Bhawans. Now, after the proceedings, these centres will be shifted to the nearest schools.

The teachers and social activists have started campaign against the merging of governemnt schools. They are calling it as a violation of free education and Right to Education of the students.
