By-Election Result 2024: INDIA Bloc Wins 10 Seats; NDA Bags Two

As counting for the 13 assembly constituencies across seven states ended, INDIA bloc candidates secured victory in ten seats . The opposition bloc has jolted the BJP-led NDA, which won only two seats in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. 

The polling for 13 assembly constituencies in seven states – West Bengal (Raiganj, Ranaghat Dakshin, Bagda and Maniktala), Himachal Pradesh (Dehra, Hamirpur and Nalagarh), Uttarakhand (Badrinath and Manglaur), Bihar (Rupauli ), Punjab ( Jalandhar West ), Madhya Pradesh, ( Amarwara) and Tamil Nadu (Vikravandi) – was concluded on July 10. The by-election was held to replace MLAs who resigned or died in recent times. Many MLAs had left their constituency to contest the Lok Sabha elections, necessitating a by-election in their constituencies.

Notably, the INDIA bloc has been reinforced by winning 10 out of 13 constituencies in the by-elections after the alliance posed a huge challenge to the ruling BJP at the Centre in the recently held Lok Sabha election.

In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress swept all fours seats, pushing the BJP aside. TMC’s Krishna Kalyani won the Raiganj seat by securing over 50,000 votes margin. 

 

Creating history in the state’s assembly, TMC’s Madhuparna Thakur has become the youngest MLA by winning from Bagda constituency. The 25-year-old defeated BJP’s Binay Kumar Biswas by over 30,000 votes.

 

Trinamool Congress party’s Mukut Mani Adhikari has emerged victorious from Ranaghat Dakshin constituency securing 39,408 votes majority. He defeated the BJP’s Manoj Kumar Biswah.

 

In BJP-ruled Himachal Pradesh, Congress candidate and Himachal Pradesh CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur secured victory by over 9,000 votes. Kamlesh Thakur defeated the sitting MLA and BJP candidate, Hoshyar Singh.

 

AAP’s Mohinder Bhagat emerged victorious in Punjab’s Jalandhar West constituency, by over a 23,000 margin.  

 

BJP’s Ashish Sharma retained Himachal Pradesh’s Hamipur assembly, defeating the Congress candidate Dr Pushpinder Verma. However, he secured a meagre margin of 1571 votes.

In Madhya Pradesh’s Amarwara, Congress’s Dheeran Shah Invati has emerged victorious leading with over 4000 votes while the DMK’s Anniyur Siva secured the Vikravandi assembly seat in Tamil Nadu. In Bihar, JD(U)’s Kaladhar Prasad Mandal has gained an edge as the counting progresses.
