Dean Kuriakose began his political life by being part of the Youth Congress of the Indian National Congress. Born in 1981 in Ernakulam, he completed his B.Sc in physics from St. Joseph’s College and did an MA in Human Rights and Politics from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, and an LL.B. from the Kerala Law Academy Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.
In 2009, Kuriakose was made the secretary of the Youth Congress in which he excelled in the role by exhibiting strong organisational and leadership skills. He has also experience working with KSU and assuming several important organisational responsibilities.
At the age of 31, he tried his his electoral debut in the Lok Sabha from the Idukki constituency in the 2014 general elections. But Mr Kuriakose trailed behind the LDF candidate Joice George and became the runner-up by a margin of 50,542 votes. The defeat notably helped Kuriakose to capture it the next time, with him emerging victorious defeating the then LDF MP Joice George with a significant majority of 171,053 votes in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. With seven assembly segments, the constituency has seen relative supremacy for the grand old party.
However, the 42-year-old MP has been active in parliament with 90 percent of attendance participating 91 debates. He has raised 289 questions and introduced 12 private bills across different sessions. He has over one crore declared assets and has 204 cases registered against him, according to his affidavit.
The LDF has also decided to re-nominate the former MP Joice George for the third time and therefore the fight between the LDF’s Joice George and Congress’s Dean Kuriakose is analysed to be the toughest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
