The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is all set to face the Lok Sabha elections 2024. As part of this, CPI(M) finalised its list of candidates on Wednesday, February 21. However, the official announcement of the candidates will be made on February 26.
CPM Thiruvananthapuram district secretary V Joy is also included in the candidate list. V Joy MLA, who currently represents the Varkala constituency, is one of the party”s three district secretaries contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. V Joy will contest from the Attingal Lok Sabha constituency. He was born in May 1965 and had a humble beginning as a public worker. He had served in the party”s various positions. This includes the roles of SFI District President, District Secretary, and DYFI District Vice President. V Joy also served as Azhoor panchayat president and was later elected as Chirayinkeezhu block panchayat member. The CPI(M) leader also worked as a member of the Thiruvananthapuram District Panchayat and a senate member at Kerala University.
In 2016, V Joy contested the Kerala Assembly elections as the CPI(M) candidate. Notably, he secured 53,102 votes and defeated three-time member of the Legislative Assembly, Varkala Kahar. It was a close contest between V Joy and Congress candidate Varkala Kahar, as the winning margin was just 2,386 votes. In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, V Joy again won the Varkala Assembly constituency by defeating Congress candidate BRM Shafeer by a margin of 17821 votes.
The CPI(M) leader was elected as the party”s Thiruvananthapuram district secretary in January 2023. The party handed over this important role to V Joy after Anavoor Nagappan was elected to the state secretariat. Attingal Lok Sabha constituency is the sitting seat of Congress. Adoor Prakash, the Congress leader, has won the 2019 Lok Sabha polls by defeating CPI(M)’s A Sampath with a margin of over 39,000 votes.
