The Election Commission of India appointed National Award-winning actor Rajkumar Rao as the National Icon ahead of the assembly elections in a formal event on Thursday. He was chosen to this position ahead of assembly elections in five states scheduled for November and the General Elections 2024. Through recognising Mr Rao as a national icon, commission”s aim is to encourage and inspire citizens to actively participate in the electoral process.

Mr Rao is known for his remarkable roles in Hindi Films. His noteworthy performance in Newton, where Rao essayed the role of a government official, who undertook a free and fair election in the Naxal-affected regions of Chhattisgarh withstanding various challenges, has received appreciation. The movie received the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi. Besides, it was also India”s nominee for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Awards.

The EC panel comprising Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel exchanged a memorandum of understanding with Rao designating him as an EC icon.

Earlier, the Commission has selected actors Pankaj Tripathi and Aamir Khan, and sports personalities such as Sachin Tendulkar, M S Dhoni and  MC Mary Kom, as national icons.

On the work front, Mr Rao”s recent release is Raj & DK”s Netflix series, Guns & Gulaabs. His upcoming works include, Mr and Mrs Mahi, and Stree 2.
