New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday, July 23, announced that it has started the process of electing the next Vice President of India two days after the resignation of former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar.

The EC has started composing an Electoral College, which consists of elected as well as nominated members of the Rajya Sabha as well as the Lok Sabha, and finalising returning officers and assistant returning officers. The preparation and dissemination of background material on all the previous Vice-Presidential Elections is also underway as part of the pre-poll date announcement activities.

In a statement, the country’s poll body said that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) formally notified of Dhankhar’s resignation, noting that the EC, under Article 324, is mandated to conduct the election to the office of the Vice President of India.

The commission highlighted that the formal schedule for the election will be announced soon after the completion of pre-election activities, adding that the preparatory work for the election is already underway.

“The Vice President of India is governed by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952 and the rules made thereunder, namely the Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections Rules, 1974. Accordingly, the Election Commission of India has already started the preparations relating to the Vice-Presidential Elections, 2025,” poll body said in its statement. It added that on completion of the preparatory activities, the announcement of the Election Schedule to the office of the Vice-President of India will follow “as soon as possible.”

 

Jagdeep Dhankhar stepped down as the vice president on Monday, in a surprise move, citing health reasons, though his term was supposed to end in 2027.
