Spread over Bulandshahr and Gautam Buddha Nagar districts, Uttar Pradesh”s Gautam Buddha Nagar Lok Sabha constituency will see BJP candidate and sitting MP Dr Mahesh Sharma’s attempt at keeping the seat within his grasp for the third consecutive time.

Born in Rajasthan, Sharma has been a staunch follower of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Singh (RSS) in his early days and was associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP, during his student days.

Despite facing defeat in the 2009 general elections, Sharma has been able to maintain his stronghold over the Gautam Buddha Nagar Lok Sabha seat since 2014 with a significant margin each time. In 2014, he secured 50 percent of the votes, defeating the Samajwadi Party’s (SP) Narendra Bhati, who got 26 percent of the votes. Notably, it was the first time a candidate from the constituency won all five assembly segments.

During his tenure, Gautam Buddha Nagar has witnessed significant developmental progress, especially within urban areas. At the same time, the slow pace of development in rural areas remains an issue for 51 percent of voters in the area (according to the 2011 census). Situated between the Yamuna and Hindon rivers, Gautam Buddha Nagar experiences severe floods triggered by incessant rainfall. Concerns to law and order and water scarcity are some of the problems the people of Gautham Buddha Nagar continue to face.

In 2019, Sharma secured 59 percent of the votes, while the Bahujan Samaj Party’s (BSP) Satveer Nagar secured 35 percent of the votes.

Thanking the party, Sharma said, “It is my good fortune that I am nominated to be a public representative from Gautam Buddha Nagar Lok Sabha seat of Uttar Pradesh, the largest state of the country, to take forward the dreams, aspirations, and hopes of a new and developed India under the energetic and visionary leadership of the Honourable Prime Minister.”

The Gautam Buddha Nagar constituency comprises five Vidhan Sabha, or legislative assembly segments, such as Noida, Dadri, Jewar, Sikandarabad, and Khurja (SC reserved).
