Surya Prakash Khatri, the BJP candidate, secured victory with a margin of 1,168 votes, defeating Surinder Pal Singh (Bittoo), the Aam Aadmi Party candidate, in Timarpur assembly constituency. Singh, who was initially in the lead with a slender margin, bagged 54,773 votes. Khatri won 55,941 votes.
Congress’ Lokendra Kalyan Singh follows third with 8,361 votes.
Singh first won the seat in 2003 and then in 2008 as a Congress candidate.
In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, AAP’s Dilip Pandey won in the seat defeating Singh, who stood for elections as a BJP candidate, by a margin of 24,144. AAP had a vote share of 57.6 percent in 2020 in this seat.
In the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections, AAP’s Pankaj Pushkar of AAP won by defeating BJP’s Rajni Abbi by a margin of 20,647 in the seat. AAP had a vote share of 51.05 percent in 2015 in this seat.
Timarpur assembly constituency falls under the North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.
The general category seat is situated in the central Delhi district and is one of the 10 assembly segments that make up the North East Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.
The triangular contest in the national capital created palpable tension. While AAP and Congress are part of INDIA alliance on national level, the two parties are contesting against each other in Delhi. If BJP won the capital, it would be a huge comeback after 27 years.
