Outrageous?:Debate Over YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia's Controversial Remark

The growing public outrage towards YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia after he made obviously disgusting and filth-filled remarks in his show, India’s Got Tatent, is reflecting the people’s deep and genuine feelings towards the crass and insensitive’ comments.

While some try to play down the seriousness of the indelicate controversial remark, justifying the YouTubers’ joke as dark humor, which the particular program demands, the boundary for right of individuals to freedom of expression needs to be discussed in this background. The YouTuber, better known as Beer Biceps in the controversial show, was heard saying, ““Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?” inviting strong criticism and calls for boycotting. The YouTuber has lost thousands of followers since the controversy.

Some are calling it an unwanted collective attack against the YouTuber, perhaps a planned one raising ‘what about this and that.’ They are calling the public outrage against Ranveer a hypocrisy, noting that there are many others, primarily politicians, spreading hate speech day and night with none questioning them. They are pointing out that even these very politicians who are indulging in peddling hate every day are taking the issue up to the Parliament, noting the paradox while justifying the YouTubers’ apparently degenerative remarks.

For many, the remark is not that outrageous given that such types of jokes are not new, and they exist in several pop culture events, including in the US. However, they too admit the fact that the people are more critical towards such comments from a person like Ranveer, who allegedly made his brand identify by being an ideal person preaching spiritual, Sanatani values.

When people saw the same man doing the same thing, especially with regard to parents, it made the viewers abhorrent towards the YouTuber. They are also of the view that the development would not impact the other co-hosts, including Samay Raina and Apoorva Mukhija, as people already know about their content and what they resonate with, unlike Ranveer. They say that people are happy to see his career at stake, questioning the need for the FIRs against him.

Maheshwer Peri, the founder of CAREERS 360, on his LinkedIn profile, defended the YouTubers, saying that it was a subscription-based comedy show for its members who pay to hear the humor presented.  There wasn’t any threat. It was not forced. There was no hate, he pointed out, claiming that the language used is regularly spoken on the streets and that no one in the audience complained or abused.

Samay Raina’s show was a comedy show. It was for members only. The members were paid members. It was subscription based. There wasn’t any threat. It was not forced. There was no hate. People paid to hear such comedy. The language used is regularly spoken on the streets. No one in the audience complained. No one was abused. None was hurt. It is time we draw a line where the state can use its force against any speech. Especially, when it is in comedy or any other art form. When we become the cheer leaders for such state intervention, the fine line will someday get extended and devour us too. Lastly, and most importantly, I hated that comment of Ranveer Allahabadia. I also hate him for peddling half truths hiding behind his star image. I hated most of his podcasts. The backlash is well deserved. The loss of followers was a choice well excercised. But does it invite the state to criminalise his idiotic comments – Hell NO!,” Peri wrote on LinkedIn.

Notably, the majority of the people are against the YouTuber, who see his ‘parents’ sex’ remark as utterly outrageous and inflammatory, with people reacting that such types of jokes would be met with severe repercussions even among people in the streets.

However, multiple FIRs are being filed against Ranveer and Samay, and the fellow judges, including Apoorva Makhija, Ashish Chanchlani, and Jaspreet Singh, and its producers in different states. The trouble for Ranveer has not stopped there, as the controversy cost the YouTuber his subscribers and brand collaborations.
